A GOP Symphony of Ambiguity
Posted in on 09/12/07
Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis
Then:
“If Republicans get the job done and come up with a transportation plan, how can the Democrats vote ‘No’ after all they’ve said?” [The Virginian-Pilot, 1/14/06]
Now:
“I think it has gotten people riled up enough, and it is clearly an issue so many Virginians feel strongly about, [that] the governor needs to listen to those people and call us into a special session.” [Washington Post, 7/17/07]
Del. Scott Lingamfelter
Then:
“The bottom line is if you are a safe driver with only minor infractions, you have nothing to fear from this law. But real abusers — those who have a chronic record of dangerous driving or who have taken the lives of others — will and should pay for their reckless behavior.” [Potomac News, 7/13/07]
Now:
“Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William, who 12 days ago defended unsafe-driver fees, now says they should be repealed.” [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 7/25/07]
Del. Bill Janis
Then:
“Del. Bill Janis, R-Short Pump, defended the fees and insisted they have come under strong criticism partly as a result of ‘some of the sensationalistic and misleading bunk’ that has been written in newspapers and on the Internet.” [Daily Progress, 7/8/07]
Now:
“Del. Bill Janis, R-Short Pump, sent Gov. Timothy M. Kaine a letter asking him to use his executive authority to order state agencies to stop collecting the fees until the General Assembly considers changing or abolishing them.” [Daily Progress, 8/21/07]
Del. Danny Marshall
Then:
“Del. Danny Marshall, R-Danville, said he still supports the fees. He said he believes the controversy is based in large part on a misunderstanding by the general public. ‘I think there is probably a lot of misinformation out there,’ he said.” [Martinsville Bulletin, 7/17/07]
Now:
“Delegate Danny Marshall, R-Danville, has joined an increasing number of legislators who have had a change of heart about supporting the controversial abusive driver fees.” [Danville Register & Bee, 8/22/07]
Dave Hunt
Then:
“‘First and foremost, I support the 2007 transportation bill without qualification,’ Hunt said. ‘This is the biggest thing to come down the pike in 20 years. Regardless of party, we need to support this bill.’” [The Fairfax County Times, 3/20/07]
Now:
“Hunt denies supporting the ‘abuser fees,’ which were included as part of a massive state transportation bill the General Assembly passed earlier this year… ‘I’ve stated that I would vote to repeal those abuser fees; that’s been my position for the last month and a half,’ Hunt said.” [The Fairfax County Times, 8/28/07]
Marc Cadin
Then:
“I applaud the Republican General Assembly’s passage of the most sweeping transportation legislation in a generation… I hope that the Governor will soon recognize the leadership of the General Assembly on this issue and sign this bill into law.” [Cadin web site, 6/28/07]
Now:
“I have called on the governor to convene the General Assembly in a special session to fix the mistakes that were made with regard to the ‘abuser fees.’” [The Fairfax County Times, 8/28/07]
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling
Then:
“[F]inalize agreement on a plan to increase fines and penalties for traffic-related offenses by at least $50 million a year.” [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 9/24/06]
Now:
“Bolling now reportedly supports repeal.” [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 8/26/07]
