Mark Cole has his cake and eats it too

While his fellow Republicans are trying to figure out if they supported or opposed this year’s transportation plan, Del. Mark Cole has taken a different approach – he voted against the bill, but still takes credit for the funding it provides (HB3202). Here’s a close-up of the Cole literature pictured above:

“Mark has successfully passed legislation in Richmond to increase transportation funds.”

We assume that doesn’t include the following projects, which are just a few in the Fredericksburg area included in the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s latest six-year plan (Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, 6/22/07 ). Cole voted against the increased funding for all of them:

  • $9.9 million to plan improvements to the congested Falmouth intersection
  • $10 million to start preparations for the widening of U.S. 17 in Stafford
  • $30.3 million for through lanes and turn lanes on State Route 3 in Spotsylvania County, eastbound and westbound.
  • $24.7 million to replace a bridge over Mattox Creek on State Route 205 in Westmoreland County
  • $3.7 million to replace another bridge on Route 205 at Tide Mill Stream.

In fact, none of the transportation funding bills that Cole introduced this year even made it out of committee (HB1638, HB1724, HB1725). And one of them, HB1648, actually would have decreased funding.
